Yelp Application for BMW Drivers

Is it too early to get a start on next year's Christmas list?  I don't think so.

And, I've already found the first thing to put on mine.  Of course, I'd have to add a new or pre-owned BMW to the list as well, but, Checkered Flag BMW can help me with that.  Check out the new Yelp application for BMW ConnectDrive.

Article and photo source: [autoblog.com]

In-car point-of-interest and Google searches are all well and good, but it's hard to decipher what restaurants, bars and other local businesses are worth your hard-earned bucks while you're on the go. Yelp for BMW ConnectedDrive solves that problem.

Whatever your view of Yelp is (and there are many), the crowd-sourced business rating site is still the go-to source for many looking for up-to-date, relevant rankings of what's nearby. And with the latest update from BMW Online, drivers of most 2009 and later models can benefit from the service.

Additionally, you can email business listings to yourself or a friend, and BMW's infotainment system can also read off the three latest reviews so you won't be staring at the screen while trying to find a suitable sushi joint.

BMW today announced that users of BMW Online in the US can now access Yelp in their vehicles. With Yelp on-board, customers can search for everything from the best local restaurants and boutiques to parking garages and banks. They are able to see ratings for those businesses while hearing reviews read out to them via the vehicle's text-to-speech feature. With the recent update to BMW Online's layout, BMW can seamlessly add new features (known as "applications") as they become available. Yelp is the first such application and there will be more to follow.

Customers who subscribe to the optional BMW Assist Convenience Plan and have a navigation-equipped vehicle capable of receiving the BMW Online service will be able to add the service today, without having to make any changes to their vehicle.

Yelp reviews can be accessed through the new Applications screen that is now part of BMW Online with the update which took place earlier this month.

BMW Online is just one of the many ConnectedDrive services available to BMW customers. BMW ConnectedDrive combines various elements from online applications, driver assistance, call center services and solutions for the integration of mobile devices. As a result, BMW customers are provided with an exceptional form of mobility, with more safety, more convenience, and more infotainment.

The BMW Online Yelp application has several exciting features - Category Search - Search by category for nearby restaurants, cafes, shopping, nightlife, and more. - Results Overview - Results are sorted by distance and star ratings, and also list category information and number of reviews. - Details - Selecting a particular place gives more details about it.

Customers can see the rating, address, distance, phone number, and information about reviews. Additionally, they can e-mail details of the business to themselves or any other e-mail address. - Reviews - The 3 latest reviews are available for the business. The customer can select one of those reviews and have it read back automatically.

BMW Online is available exclusively to Convenience Plan subscribers on BMW Assist with on-board Navigation system on the following models:

2009 and later Z4, 1, 3 and 7 Series
2010 and later 5 and 6 Series
2010 and later X5 and X6
2011 and later X3.

End of article.

Pretty cool, huh?  The best part of the Yelp application is that it is available for current Checkered Flag BMW drivers.  If you would like more information on BMW Online or BMW apps, contact your favorite Hampton Roads BMW store at (757)490-1111.

Adorable BMW Z4 Stowaways

Forget 335 horsepower.  This BMW Z4 is running on 6 squirrel power!

This story out of BMW is just too cute to keep to ourselves.  Take a look at the six most adorable stowaways to ever cross the border and spark a whole furry, I mean, flurry of BMW media buzz.

Article and photo source: [onehotlap.com]

After two BMW CCA driving school sessions at Watkins Glen Int'l, an event participant complained about the car feeling a bit "squirrely" out on the track. When he popped the hood open to investigate a possible cause, he found acorn leftovers and critter poop all over the engine bay. Upon further examination, it was determined that 6 baby squirrels had turned the car's airbox into their home and had been smuggled from Toronto through the U.S. border.

The event chair personally put on a squirrel rescue clinic getting all of the illegal immigrants out of the airbox by their tail and relocating them to a place where they won't have to experience threshold braking at 140 mph. BMW CCA is rumored to be putting together computer-based squirrel rescue training for other event chairs to follow. BMW North America is intrigued by the findings and is currently exploring options to replace its famous 6-cylinder inline engines with more eco-friendly 6-squirrels inline. Many animal rights groups have reportedly lined up to sponsor the driver's Team Flying Squirrels in honor of his support with providing luxury housing for the young family of squirrels. Because of the heightened interest in baby squirrels, it is now expected that Hollywood will be replacing Alvin & the Chipmunks with squirrels in its next squeakel. However, rumors that a Canadian goat was also found in the passenger seat of the vehicle and the driver ran over an instructor who tried to steal it and then dragged him all the way from the paddock to Turn 1 have been greatly exaggerated.

End of article.

I know, it's cheesy, but, I think these squirrels had some pretty good taste in choosing their home.  While I can't recommend any of our Checkered Flag BMW customers set up house under the hood, I can recommend dropping by and spending some time behind the wheel of the 2011 BMW Z4

2012 BMW Z4 First Review

The convertible BMW Z4 has long been a favorite here at our Virginia Beach BMW location.  Maybe it's because people love driving with the top down; the wind blowing through their hair.  Maybe it's because Checkered Flag BMW drivers love the perfect balance of speed and maneuverability.  Most of all, I think it's because the BMW Z4 simply looks cooler than cool.

This week Autoblog.com took the time to test out the new 2012 BMW Z4 sDrive28i and, no surprise, they LOVED it.

Article Source: [Autoblog]

For over a decade, only one premium automaker has offered a four-cylinder in the U.S. And while the recent rise of Audi in the States isn't solely because of its 2.0T engine, it's obvious that luxury buyers are finally coming around to the idea of a fuel-sipping four-pot. As a matter of fact, they're starting to demand it. And BMW is heeding the call.

Next year, BMW will begin offering its turbocharged and direct-injected 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine on the 3 Series and 5 Series, matching Audi car-for-car in the entry-level and mid-size segments. But before the sedans arrive on U.S. shores - nixing the naturally aspirated 3.0-liter inline-six in the process - BMW is slipping its TwinPower four-cylinder into an unlikely host: the 2012 Z4 sDrive28i.

Why unlikely? Just look at the length of that hood. It was designed from the onset to house one of BMW's venerable inline six-cylinder engines, but by lopping off two cylinders, BMW almost made a front-midship roadster.

The mounting points used to fit the outgoing six-cylinder and the current turbocharged 3.0-liter are the same that hold this TwinPower turbo four in place. The byproduct is an impressive weight balance of 47.3/52.7 front-to-rear, an improvement - depending on your perspective - from the 47.9/52.1 of the six-cylinder model.

The new N20 four-cylinder is the first engine to benefit from BMW's recently revealed modular engine program, and it's the same mill we sampled earlier this year in the not-for-U.S.-consumption X1 xDrive28i. Power remains almost unchanged in the Z4, with 240 horsepower coming on between 5,000 and 6,500 RPM and 260 pound-feet of torque available from 1,250 and 4,800 revs. While the new N20 is down by 15 hp compared to the six, torque output is up some 40 lb-ft. And the extra juice is evident the moment you mash the throttle.

Fitted with the six-speed manual, BMW claims the Valvetronic-equipped four will hit 60 mph in 5.5 seconds, while the new eight-speed automatic gearbox does the deed in 5.6 seconds - a decrease of 0.1 and 0.4 seconds, respectively, over the six-cylinder. And as you'd expect, overall weight is down as well, with the new four-cylinder Z4 tipping the scales at 3,252 pounds, or about 33 pounds less than the outgoing sDrive28i.

Predictably, that minimal weight loss can't be felt from behind the wheel, but the extra grunt is front and center. There's a hint of turbo lag below 2,000 rpm when you're lining up for a pass, but as soon as the single, twin-scroll turbo starts huffing and puffing, the Z4 accelerates more authoritatively than the six. Driving the old and new models back-to-back, we also noticed slightly less dive and squat from the mildly reworked suspension (BMW isn't saying what's been done, aside from tweaking the springs and shocks for the new weight balance), but that's probably more a product of the box-fresh four-cylinder compared to the slightly abused previous generation tester.

We also sampled both the manual 'box and new eight-speed automatic transmission, and while we're partial to choosing our own ratios through the slick stick, the auto's quick changes and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters trade a modicum of engagement for a healthy dose of convenience. It's one of the few times we wouldn't fault buyers for choosing the slush box, and considering the average Z4 owner, we're sure it'll be the most popular transmission.

Naturally, you want numbers, but BMW is only giving one for now: $48,650 (plus $875 for destination). That's an increase of $1,200 over the outgoing model, but for 2012, Bluetooth and USB integration, along with trunk-through loading and an alarm system, all come standard, so the price bump is nearly a wash with the new equipment. As for the other figures you're after, well, BMW isn't giving up fuel economy estimates just yet. With the (surprisingly abrupt) start-stop system fitted to the Z4 sDrive28i, BMW claims that fuel efficiency is up by 20 percent over the six-cylinder in the EU test cycle, but that could go either up or down when the EPA estimates arrive later this year. Figuring the outgoing model managed 18/28 mpg city/highway, it's safe to assume the four-cylinder should ring in around 22 mpg in the city and 33 on the highway.

More importantly, the character of the Z4 is completely unaffected by the new engine. The six's sonorous tones have been replaced with a hint of turbo whistle and a thrum from the exhaust, but the overall experience remains surprisingly unchanged. Grunt is up, fuel consumption is down and top-down cruising is just as good as it ever was. The replacement for displacement is here, and if it's executed this well, we'll gladly give up a liter or two for the privilege.

End of article.

BMW Electric i Series Concept Photos

The latest buzz around the autoblogosphere has some Checkered Flag BMW fans very excited.  Earlier this week, BMW released full details about their new electric BMW i Series.  Two very exciting concepts, the i3 and i8 were both revealed in Frankfurt, but, it is unlikely that the final release i models will have the exaggerated futuristic (and kind of insect-esque) style.  Unfortunately, it will still be a long time before we see the BMW i electric vehicles at our Virginia Beach BMW store.  They are, however, not too far off.

By Damon Lavrinc  Posted Jul 29th 2011 6:00AM

We've just touched down in Frankfurt to get all the details on BMW's new electric cars, but before we get into the nitty-gritty of BMW i, its philosophy and the engineering behind it, here's a brief introduction to the first two models, the i3 and i8.

Officially, the two artfully greenhoused cars seen above are 'concepts,' but they're actually anything but.

i3

Originally teased as the MegaCity concept, the BMW i3 will be the first vehicle produced under the i brand when it arrives next year. Two structures make up both the i3 and i8's LifeDrive architecture - predictably, the Life and Drive modules.

As its name would suggest, the Life part of the equation is what contains the driver and passengers, and the platforms have been individually developed for each model. In the case of the i3, a lightweight body structure is made up of a combination of aluminum and carbon fiber-reinforced plastics, with the Drive module mounted underneath, obviating the need for a transmission tunnel and allowing BMW to install two bench seats for four occupants in the front and back while providing 200 liters (7.06 cubic-feet) of storage.

Underneath that lightweight body lies the Drive system, comprised of the suspension, battery and drivetrain, along with structural and safety components. A liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery back spans the undercarriage and supplies juice to an electric motor mounted directly above the rear-drive axle. Yup, this a rear-wheel-drive EV hatchback, with the motor putting out 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque through a single-speed gearbox. BMW claims the i3 can reach an electronically limited top speed of 93 miles per hour and make the run from 0-60 in under eight seconds.

An available PRO ECO mode tweaks the throttle and electronics to boost efficiency, and braking regeneration feeds kinetic energy back into the battery pack. Remarkably, BMW also claims that you can charge the battery back to full in six hours using a standard power socket and the i3's batteries can get to 80 percent in one hour using a high-speed charger (we'll be getting more details on both very soon).

If battery power isn't enough for you, the i3 will be available with a range-extending internal combustion engine (dubbed REx) further down the road, although BMW hasn't divulged the exact displacement or how much additional range it will include beyond the projected 80-100 miles on electric power alone.

i8

If a rear-drive, EV hatchback doesn't stoke your enthusiast flames, then the i8 might be more to your tastes.

Unlike the standard i3, the i8 will be a plug-in hybrid, with a turbocharged, 1.5-liter three-cylinder powerplant mounted up front and putting out 220 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque. Combined with the electric motor, the run from 0-60 mph is claimed to blow by in under five seconds, with fuel consumption estimated at three liters per 100 kilometers and seven liters per 100 clicks when driven like... well, a BMW.

The three-pot works in tandem with a lithium-ion battery pack and front-mounted electric motor pulled from the i3 and driving the front wheels, allowing an electric-only range of up to 20 miles on a charge. Put both systems together and you've got a front-wheel-drive vehicle for maximum efficiency, a rear-driver for maximum fun and all-wheel drive for maximum grip. And if that isn't enticing enough, the i8 has a perfect 50/50 weight distribution.

We'll have more about both models and the i brand as a whole in the coming days, but in the meantime, check out the gallery below for the first official eyeful.  End of Article.

These are definitely some impressive signs of times to come.  But, I almost wish automakers would spend less time on the flash of getting the concepts out, and more time actually building the final product so that our Checkered Flag BMW customers can get on the road.

Of course, as soon as we have more word on the BMW electric i Series release, I'll be sure to have it up right away.
