2013 Scion FR-S Sport Car Press Release

Whew whee!  Did somebody turn up the heat?

Checkered Flag fans have held a long love for fast cars, and, the new 2013 Scion FR-S does not disappoint.

Here are all the available juicy details for the new ultimate Scion sport car under the Toyota flag.

Official Toyota Press Release:

2013 Scion FR-S Brings the SPORT Back to the CAR

- Low center of gravity and lightweight design achieves a "Pure Balance"
- Compact rear-wheel drive sports car makes world debut
- World's first boxer engine to utilize Toyota's D4-S direct and port injection system

Los Angeles - November 30, 2011 - Scion tonight unveiled its 2013 FR-S compact rear-wheel drive sports car to a crowd of eager car enthusiasts. The high-performance coupe is the fifth model to join the Scion family and will go on sale in the spring of 2012.

The FR-S, which stands for Front-engine, Rear-wheel drive, Sport; is Scion's definition of an authentic rear-wheel-drive sports car with exceptionally balanced performance and handling, compelling style, flexible utility and surprising MPG.

"Serving as a laboratory for Toyota, Scion is always experimenting with new things," said Jack Hollis, Scion vice president. "The brand is iconic with the xB, adrenalized by the tC, and groundbreaking with the iQ. The FR-S will no doubt serve as the halo car, expanding Scion into a new dimension of driving performance."

The FR-S is a true "scion," born into a lengthy history of Toyota performance cars and motorsports. The sports car is most inspired by the AE86 generation of the Corolla, better known as the Hachi-Roku, meaning "8-6" in Japanese. The front-engine, rear-wheel-drive coupe was lightweight and well balanced, making it a solid choice for driving enthusiasts.

Inspired by the AE86, the FR-S is designed around the core goal of achieving, "Pure Balance." The balance begins with the strategic use of the world's only flat boxer engine in a front-engine, rear-wheel drive configuration. The engine's compact size and flat shape allow it to be mounted mid-ship and extremely low, giving the car a dynamically favorable front-to-rear weight ratio of 53:47 and a low center of gravity comparable to some exotic supercars.

The FR-S's 2.0-liter, naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine is the result of a joint development between Toyota and Subaru. The partnership begins by combining Subaru's newly developed horizontally opposed engine and Toyota's cutting edge D-4S injection system that incorporates both direct and port injection. The D-4S system, partnered with a high 12.5:1 compression ratio, results in an impressive 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque.

"We all know that it's not hard to make horsepower and torque, but it is hard to do all that and still achieve impressive fuel economy," Hollis said. "The FR-S accomplishes all three."

The flat-four mates with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. The manual offers quick, precise shifts with a short-throw; while the automatic transmission features aggressive up shifts and sporty rev-matched down shifts that are initiated by steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Power is transferred to the pavement via a limited-slip differential.

The idea of "Pure Balance" is further realized by the FR-S's lightweight design and compact size. The combination allows the car to be quick and nimble into and out of corners, with dynamic maneuverability and confident handling. The coupe's weight is kept to a minimum by utilizing an aluminum hood, a solid roof, and by featuring a trunk design instead of a hatchback.

The FR-S's low weight is matched with a dynamically tuned suspension setup consisting of MacPherson struts up front and a double wishbone system in the rear. Lightweight 17-inch alloy wheels and ventilated disc brakes are on all four corners.

The fierce exterior of the FR-S is a solid reflection of its inner power. The profile, inspired by the Toyota 2000GT, reveals a hood and roof-line that is remarkably sleek and low, giving it an aerodynamic shape that channels air cleanly over to the top. The low stance continues to exaggerate the coupe's menacing face, which is made up of sharp lines, a wide mouth and angular headlights. The aggressive front fenders protrude upward and boast the iconic '86' piston emblem, which highlights the car's AE86 heritage as well as its unique new boxer engine. The rear fascia sits low and wide, with aerodynamic lower treatments that surround the sporty dual exhaust system. LEDs illuminate the edgy taillights, while center-mounted backup lights finish the muscular design.

The FR-S's interior features a 2+2 seating configuration that is designed with both form and function in mind. The front seats are mounted extremely low and are comfortable yet assertive, while the rear seat folds down flat, creating flexible space. The large center-mounted tachometer is the focus of the three-gauge cluster, keeping the driver informed of the engine's vitals. Speed is monitored by both digital and analog gauges.

Scion iQ Soon Headed to the US

Here we go, Checkered Flag Scion fans!  Scion has just released the new juicy details for all new totally radical 2012 Scion iQ.

This long awaited Scion iQ was previously held up by earthquake and tsunami devastation earlier this year in Japan.  But, now, we have gotten the official word that the 2012 iQ will be headed to the U.S. as early as October, hitting the east coast early in 2012.  Of course, Checkered Flag Scion will be the first Virginia Beach Scion dealer to have the new iQ available for our Scion fans.

So, how much is this new Scion iQ going to cost?  Well, the word on the streets is that the new 2012 Scion iQ will have a starting price of only $15,995!  And, in true Scion form, many options and packages will be available for the new iQ.

Here's a breakdown of the 2012 Scion iQ from the official U.S. Scion release:

Made possible by intelligent and functional packaging, the iQ succeeds at taking big ideas and
concentrating them into a small package.

Intelligent engineering innovations like a compact air-conditioning unit, inverted front-mounted
differential, and electronic power-steering system with a compact steering column are
responsible for the iQ's ability to be small in size, but large in capability. Interior passenger
space is optimized by the unique "3+1" offset seating arrangement that allows for one adult
behind the front passenger and a child or small package behind the driver.

In addition to a standard Star Safety System, the iQ is packed with an industry leading 11
standard airbags and includes the world's first rear-window airbag. Other airbags include driverand
front-passenger airbags; driver- and front-passenger seat-mounted side airbags; side curtain
airbags; driver- and front-passenger knee airbags; and a Scion-first, driver and front passenger
seat-cushion airbags.

The 2012 iQ is equipped with a 1.3-liter, four-cylinder engine that produces 94 horsepower and
89 lb.-ft of torque. It features the latest dual VVT-i, which allows it to be impressively efficient,
providing a broader powerband yet requiring less fuel and generating fewer emissions.

The iQ is rated as an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV-II), and achieves an EPA-estimated
combined fuel economy of 37 miles per gallon, comparable to similar vehicles that feature less
passenger and cargo capacity.

The iQ's profile, defined by a strong and high beltline, glides from the large, stout headlamps, up
the A-pillar, across the roof and wraps around the rear, emphasizing the iQ's geometric shape.
Side mirrors with integrated turn signals accent the clean design and give it a premium look.

For more information on the 2012 Scion iQ, or any currently available 2011 Scion, call Checkered Flag Scion at (757)490-1111.  For a Scion test drive, stop by our Scion store located at Checkered Flag Toyota in Virginia Beach.

Sneak Peek of New Scion iQ

Checkered Flag Scion fans certainly have a lot to be excited for this season.  With two new Scion models, the Scion iQ and the Scion FR-S soon to be released, our phones here at Checkered Flag Scion have been ringing off the hook with Scion fans hungry for details.

To give our Hampton Roads Scion fans a sneak peek of the Scion iQ, Checkered Flag Scion released this new video this week:

Delayed due to the recent Japan earthquake and tsunami destruction, the release date of the Scion iQ has been pushed back a bit.  Checkered Flag Scion will be the first Virginia Beach Scion dealer to stock the new Scion iQ as soon as they are officially released.  For now, you can visit Checkered Flag Scion (located in the Checkered Flag Toyota location) and reserve an incoming Scion iQ.  Call Checkered Flag Scion at (757)490-1111 for more details.

Surprisingly, accurate Scion iQ information hasn't really taken over the auto internet world yet, but here is an official release straight from Scion with all the juicy details:

iQ Defines Premium Micro-Subcompact

Meeting the needs of a new trendsetting generation of urban drivers, the iQ succeeds at taking big ideas and concentrating them into a small package.  Made possible by intelligent and functional packaging, the iQ is a small car that offers the functionality and comfort that drivers expect from a car twice its size.

The iQ's profile, defined by a strong and high beltline, glides from the large, stout headlamps, up the A-pillar, across the roof and wraps around the rear, emphasizing the iQ's geometric shape. Side mirrors with integrated turn signals accent the clean design.

The rear emphasizes the vehicle's modern style.  Trapezoidal lines run toward the wheels, from the hatch to the bumper's rear diffuser-like accent, creating a substantial presence. With a 78.7-inch wheelbase and a unique suspension design - consisting of MacPherson struts up front, and a torsion beam rear suspension - the three-door hatchback can deftly maneuver through city traffic.  In addition, its overall length of only 120.1-inches, width of 66.1-inches, and short front and rear overhangs create a confident stance that still allows the iQ to fit into virtually any urban parking scenario.

Engineering innovations like a compact air-conditioning unit, inverted front-mounted differential, and electronic power-steering system with compact steering column, all amount to significant decreases in front-end length.  In addition, the iQ is equipped with a flat gas tank housed beneath the floor that reduces rear overhang.

The iQ's functional "3+1" seating equates to the world's smallest four-passenger vehicle.  With the driver's and front-passenger's seats being slightly off set, this innovative seating arrangement allows for one adult behind the front passenger and a child, small package, or pet behind the driver.  A first for Scion, extra-slim front seat backs are utilized to provide rear passengers with ample legroom.  The rear seats are extremely versatile, featuring a 50/50 split and the ability to fold flat, creating enough storage to accommodate up to two golf bags.

The iQ is small in size but large on safety.  Active safety features include Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), an anti-lock brake system (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA) and Traction Control (TRAC).

The iQ will come standard with 10 SRS airbags, including the world's first rear-window curtain airbag.  Other airbags include driver- and front-passenger airbags; driver- and front-passenger seat-mounted side airbags; side curtain airbags; driver- and front-passenger knee airbags; and a Scion-first driver seat-cushion airbag.

The 2011 iQ is equipped with a 1.3-liter, four-cylinder engine that produces over 90 horsepower and features the latest dual VVT-i, which allows it to be impressively efficient, providing a broader powerband yet requiring less fuel and generating fewer emissions.

The iQ's engine is combined with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) that helps deliver smooth acceleration and excellent fuel efficiency.  The iQ will be rated as an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV-II), and it is expected to achieve a combined fuel economy in the high 30s, comparable to similar vehicles that feature less passenger and cargo capacity.

The iQ comes standard with a six-speaker audio system and is available with multiple audio head units for various degrees of audiophiles.  All iQs will be outfitted with USB and auxiliary ports, allowing personal devices to be easily integrated into the car.  Steering-wheel-mounted controls command the audio system to adjust volume and shuffle through music sources such as CD, AM/FM, auxiliary input, or a library from your iPodŽ or other USB device.

Scion xB is What You Need

From time to time, I get great questions in from customers who are looking for vehicles specific to their special needs.  I know that many of you out there are looking for similar information, so I chose a few each month to post for everyone.  This week I received this great request from Shannon W. in Newport News:

Question:  From Shannon W.

Kelly, I have just started my own catering business and am in need of a vehicle to tote food, beverages, plate, silverware, etc.  I usually only take on smaller jobs, so, I do not want anything too big.  My friend suggested a conversion van, but I would like something much smaller that still offers enough room (and flat surface) to transport everything I need.  Oh, and not to make things too tricky, but I also have a two year old who would need plenty of room on days when I am not hauling my catering supplies.  Does Checkered Flag carry anything that would meet my needs at a reasonable price?

My Response:

You know Shannon, I think I have the perfect pick for your catering/family needs:  the Scion xB.  Now, it may sound funny at first, but I think that when you test it out at Checkered Flag Scion next week, you will see that it meets all of your needs and fits into your budget nicely.  I have had both a florist and another caterer purchase the xB for their small business, and both of them were shocked at how much space this value of a vehicle has.  The great thing about the xB is that it has a ton of room, completely fold-flat rear seats for toting all of your goodies, and it's still family friendly with top of the line safety features.  On top of that, it looks pretty cool and has plenty of room for advertising on the sides and rear!  Check out the photo below of the trunk space.  You should be able to transport everything for a catering business of your size as well as a passenger quite comfortably.  (Make sure to bring a few catering items with you to get a good idea of fit.) We will see you at the Checkered Flag Toyota Scion location on Va Beach Blvd next week for your test drive!  I'm sure you will be pleased.

For more information on the Scion xB, or any other Checkered Flag new or used vehicle in VA Beach, just give us a call at (757)490-1111.

World's Smallest Four-Seater, Scion iQ

Looking for something smaller than a MINI Cooper, but not as teeny as a smart?  Impossible?  Not anymore.  Just take a look at the newest Scion family member, the Scion iQ.  The iQ is officially the world's smallest four-seater.  Don't believe you can fit four in there?  Just take a look at this video.

If you have trouble viewing the video, follow this link: Scion iQ (you may need to scroll down to article).

The 2011 Scion iQ, will be headed to the leading Scion dealership in Virginia Beach, Checkered Flag Scion in a few months from now. To bring it in line with the other offerings from Toyota's "youth-oriented" Scion brand, the iQ will get a bit more flash and flare than the Toyota version which debuted at the New York Auto Show earlier this year, with sharper, beefier front and rear fascias and more-muscular fenders.

The iQ obviously is tiny, but it also comes with an extensive list of standard safety equipment including: an airbag behind the rear seat, stability and traction control, ABS with panic-brake assist, and 9 other airbags as standard ( two front, two side-impact, two side-curtain, two front-seat knee airbags, a seat-cushion airbag for the driver, and the rear bag).

Power for the Virginia Scion market iQ will come from a 1.3-liter four-cylinder. Connected to the 1.3-liter will be a standard CVT (Constant Velocity Transmission), whose almost imperceptible shifting is certain to please discerning Virginia Beach Scion shoppers. Scion expects the iQ to return a combined-fuel-economy figure in the high 30s
.
VA Scion consumers will enjoy plentiful  space in the front of the iQ, thanks to numerous space-saving engineering solutions. The 2011 Scion  iQ has a traditional front-engine, front-drive layout. Cleverly, the iQ packages the differential in front of the engine, the starter motor is incorporated into the flywheel, and the steering rack is mounted up high. Even the air conditioner sits up in the center of the dashboard, allowing the firewall to be set further forward.

As the Scion division is primarily targeted towards young Virginia Beach drivers, the standard sound system will have six speakers, as well as USB and auxiliary inputs, steering-wheel-mounted controls, and multiple available head units.

The Scion iQ goes on sale at the #1 Virginia Beach VA Scion dealer, Checkered Flag Scion in early 2011. Prices have yet to be announced, but Virginia Scion consumers can expect  that the iQ will be available at our Virginia Beach Scion dealership for a budget-friendly $15,000.

For more information on leasing or purchasing the 2011 iQ from the premier Scion dealer in Virginia, contact Checkered Flag Scion at (757) 481-8230.

New Scion tC Convertible in the Works

Just yesterday I showed you pics of the brand new 2011 Scion tC with the new evolutionary design changes inside and out.  After posting the article on our Checkered Flag Auto Group facebook page, one of our long-time fans/ contributors, Daniel Apiag, brought to my attention the existence of plans to chop the top off the new model 2011 tC and create Scion's first convertible model.

The future Scion tC convertible is expected to share the 2011 tC coupe's new 180-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine to a six-speed manual or a six-speed sequential-shift automatic, both of which are new for 2011.  The tC is already Scion's most popular model, with the addition of this convertible model the youth appeal is going to skyrocket.  Because the Toyota Solara is no longer in production, the tC Convertible will be the only convertible model offered by Toyota.

Contact your Scion Va Beach dealer, Checkered Flag Scion, for more details including availability.

New Design for 2011 Scion tC

Looks like the new 2011 Scion tC has undergone a facelift.  Subtle updates to the exterior and interior design are evolutionary, keeping the signature tC look intact.  While the official images have not been released, so nothing shown here is set in stone for the US model, we at least get a good idea what the latest edition of the gen-Y fave Scion tC will look like next year.  For more info including availability, or to test drive the current Scion tC, contact your Scion Virginia Beach dealer, Checkered Flag Scion, today!
